MILTON KEYNES, UK, Oct. 22nd, 2005—The hugely anticipated indoor skydiving facility, SkyVenture Milton-Keynes (Airkix), opened its doors to the public on Saturday. Airkix is part of the Xscape entertainment complex, which boasts a range of entertainment and leisure activities, from rock climbing to indoor skiing to restaurants and shopping.
With the opening of Airkix, SkyVenture hit a new milestone in vertical wind tunnel technology. The new tunnel utilizes an innovative four-fan design producing 1,000hp and winds in excess of 150 mph. Testing shows that this tunnel may be the most efficient one ever built. In addition, the recirculating airflow allows for temperature controlled environment inside the flight chamber allowing the facility to operate regardless of the outside air temperature.
“We’re ready to do business,” says managing director and major shareholder Simon Ward. “The tunnel itself is working like a dream.”
Ward’s team of instructors was well prepared to begin business as soon as possible, with four instructors who had completed the the International BodyFlight training course and had undergone two months of apprenticeship at SkyVenture Orlando. Once the green light had been given for operations to commence, IBA trainers Joe Winters and Rusty Lewis traveled to Milton Keynes to complete the second phase of the training course with the remaining six instructors on the Airkix team.
